Dr. Candida adalla – Entomologist

Philippines' Foremost Experts in Entomology (the study of insects)

The grace of dragonflies, the social structure of honeybees, and the colorful patterns of butterflies’ wings.  These are some of the things that might have charmed Dr. Candida Adalla to become entomologist.  Dr. Adalla is one of the country’s foremost experts in entomology (the study of insects).

Dr. Candida Adalla took up Entomology at the University of the Philippines Los Banos.  She gained her master’s and doctorate degrees from the same institution, where she later taught, and which she later led as dean of the College of Agriculture.

Dr. Adalla primarily helps farmers deal with the pests that prevent them from maximizing their harvests.  Ordinarily, pests are controlled by pesticides, but Dr. Adalla’s approach to the problem is holistic.  Because she knows the ways of insects, she can identify which plants or crops possess inherent resistance to particular insect species.  Her works help plant breeders raise hybrids of important crops that are resistant to various pests.  Dr. Adalla actively participated in the breeding of pest-resistant corn, legumes and cotton varieties.  Her findings were then integrated into the farming of rice, mungbean, soybean, cowpea, peanut, and wheat.

For her accomplishments, Dr. Adalla was nominated to the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in989.

Using Venom to Probe the Brain


Dr. Lourdes J. Cruz

Turning potentially fatal poisons into substances that are used to probe the delicate processes in the brain is just one of the exceptional feats attributed to Dr. Lourdes J. Cruz.

Among her prominent researches are those that concern neuropeptides from Conus snails and antituberculosis compounds.  Her studies on the biochemistry of toxic peptides extracted from Conus marine snails let to:

1.   The characterization of over 50 biologically active peptides from Conus venom naturally used by marine snails to stun, paralyze, or kill fish that they prey upon.

2.   The development of conotoxins as biochemical probes to observe the activities of the brain.  One of the substances derived from her research, w-conotoxin, is now among the most widely used tools in evaluating neuronal calcium channels.  Another substance, u-conotoxin is used by neuroscientist when they need to control muscular activity in examining the processes that occur at the gaps between nerve cells.

For these and other achievements, Dr. Cruz was elected to the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).  She has also received other commendations and awards, which include NAST Outstanding Young Scientist Award (1981), the NCRP Achievement Award in Chemistry (1982), and the Outstanding Women in Nation’s Service Award in (Biochemistry, 1986).

Dr. Cruz earned her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of the Philippines (UP) in 1962, and her masters and doctorate from the University of Iowa in the United States.  She is a professor at the Marine Science Institute (UP)_ as well as a research professor at the University of Utah.  She is also the president of the Center for Biomolecular Science foundation, Inc.

Why Mangoes Are Never Out of Season

A mango can be eater one way or the other—sweet and ripe or immature and green.  It can be munched as it is or processed into beverages, jams, pies, salads, appetizers, candies, and ice cream.  Sometimes, you just can’t have enough of Philippine-grown mangoes because they are plumper and sweeter in comparison to those from other countries.  That’s why it is a leading export product; and thanks to Dr. Ramon Barba, there’s enough mangoes to keep everyone—all over the world—satisfied.

In the early 1970s, Dr. Ramon Barba developed mango flower induction sing potassium nitrate (KNO3).  This technology positioned the mango form a backyard desset to a formidable cash crop for the country, reigning in hundreds of millions of dollars in export earnings.  For this achievement,  Dr. Barba received several accolades, including  The Outstanding Young Men Award (1974),  IBM-DOST Award (1989), and the DA-Khush Achievement Award (1995).

Ramon Barba earned his degree in .B.S. Agronomy from the University of the Philippines in 1958.  He then took graduate studies in plant propagation at the University of Georgia in the US, and gained his doctorate in Horticulture from the University of Hawaii.  He has written over 100 scientific papers, Dr. Ramon Barba was elected to the National Academy of Sciencd and Technology (NAST) in 2004 for his various achievements in plant culture.  In its citation, NAST considers Dr. Ramon Barba’s work on mango culture as “ . . .a milestone in the study of trepical tree physiology.”
