Marie-Amèlie (de Bourbon-Sicilies) – Daughter of Ferdinand IV of Naples

The daughter of Ferdinand lV of Naples

She was born on April 26, 1782 at Caserta, Italy and died on March 24, 1866 in Claremont, Surrey.  Queen of Louis-Philippe, king of France (1830-48).  She took no interest in politics and devoted her life to her husband and the bringing up of her eight children.  The daughter of Ferdinand lV of Naples (later Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies) and Queen Maria Carolina, she was given a religious education.  She married the exiled Louis-Philippe, then duc d’Orlèans, on November 25, 1809, at Palermo.  She went with him to France when Louis XVIII became king after Napoleon’s 1814 downfall, but she fled to England during the Hundred Days (1815) and returned to Paris in 1817.  When Louis-Philippe ascended the throne in 1830, she lived in fear of a new revolution and avoided public life.  With the abdication of Louis-Philippe in February 1848, they went to England.  She was widowed in 1850.  Her Journal was published in two volumes (1938-43). – The New Encyclopedia Britannica

Dr. Perey Sajise – Philippines’ Foremost Ecologist

Dr. Percy Sajise

There is someone more deserving of the Nature Boy’s title that Ric Flair, the iconic American professional wrestler we regularly see on WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment).  That person is Dr. Perey Sajise.  He does not battle with muscle-bound baddies on a regular basis, but he has devoted his life to fighting ecological monsters.  For providing solutions to environmental problems like reforestation, and pollution, Dr. Sajise truly deserves being called the foremost ecologist in the Philippines.

Dr. Sajise is perhaps best known for his appointment as the Regional Director of the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) for Asia, Pacific, and Oceania in January 2000.  IPGRI is a premier global group whose aim is to “Mobilized cutting-edge science to reduce hunger and poverty, improve human nutrition and health, and protect the environment.”

His areas of expertise include plant ecology, natural resource management, environment, research management, and human ecology.  A member of the prestigious World Academy of Science and Arts since 2001, Dr. Sajise has directed and managed various teams to work on upland hydroecology, community-based forest management, and in the setting up of the current school of Environmental Science and Management in UPLB.

Dr. Sajise has written and co-edited six books, and has published about 120 papers and articles.

Dr. Carmelita A. Belda-Baillie – A Young Biologist at the Marine Science Institute

Dr. Carmelita A. Belda-Baillie

To lead the country to greater heights through scientific research.  This is the vision of Dr. Carmelita A. Belda-Baillie, a young biologist at the Marine Science Institute at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.

Dr. Belda-Baillie is the 1996 Outstanding Young Scientist in the Field of Zoology awardee.  This is a search sponsored by the National academy of Science and Technology.  This award is one of the citations given her since she was a student at the U.P.

Dr. Belda-Baillie started her good track record when she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from U.P. in 1985.  In 1990 she garnered a Dean’s Gold Medal for Outstanding Mater’s Student in Marine Science from the same university

It was during her post graduate course when she first gave a notable contribution in the field of mariculture.  She conducted a study which focused on the larval bioloby, growth, and nutrition of marine bivalves such as scallops and giant clams.  It was aimed to enhance the production of marine food organisms.  The success of the study was manifested when it was published in international journals and proceedings.

Later on, she completed her doctorate studies in Zoology as a fellow in Australia.  Here she won the Best Paper Award in a departmental graduate student conference in 1992.  Her thesis results were also published in international primary journals. – Bato Balani
